Describe the relationship situation from each person’s point of view.

Ginny and Georgia is an interesting television series that depicts the relationship between a mother and her teenage daughter. Georgia is a single mother. She has raised her two children alone. She got her first pregnancy with her daughter when she was barely fifteen years old but her boyfriend left to pursue his goals.

As such, she was a single mother. Georgia claims that she had to two what she had to do to raise her children, as such they should not question her choices, some of which are terrible. Ginny, on the other hand, acknowledges her mother’s love but also feels that her mother constantly makes wrong decisions that not only affects her but Ginny as well. She feels that her mother is too selfish for not considering the implications her actions on others.

Discuss the relationship’s stage and how this stage has affected the relationship situation.

The stage of the relationship is arguably the “crisis stage”. The two have gone through the “early attachment stage”, when they lived through difficult times together, including when they had to go without food, miss Christmas and birthday celebrations, and sometimes even become homeless. However, Ginny is now maturing. She can understand that her mother deliberately kept her away from her paternal family and she uses money to control her actions.

She has also met her father for the first time and thinks he is a good person. She considers moving to live with him. However, there are also areas where she does not agree with her father. Towards the end of the series, the relationship between Ginny and Georgia moves from “crisis” to “deep attachment” because Ginny has learned to overlook her mother’s weaknesses and accept her for who she is.

Choose two to four interpersonal communication theories that can be applied to this situation and discuss the research foundation for each theory.

Social exchange theory is among the theories of interpersonal communication that can be applied in the relationship between Ginny and Georgia. The theory was used by Thibaut and Kelley’s (1959) and had become one of the most important theories that explain interdependence among people. It claims that, like financial transactions, people share information about themselves to maximize the rewards and minimize the costs (Hargie, 2021).

As such, if the costs are too high, they will not share. Ginny was self-harming whenever she felt depressed. However, she withheld the information from her mother because her mother did not believe in therapy.  Instead, she thought that it was best for people to deal with their issues by themselves. Sharing with her mother that she was depressed would not have yielded the desired outcome. As such, she told her father who was more open-minded about therapy.

It can also be described using the symbolic interaction theory. The theory claims that there are structures in a society shapes how people interact with each other (Hargie, 2021). Ginny and Georgia’s relationship is a family relationship between a parent and a child. The parent is in a higher position while the child is in a lower position.

As such, Georgia expects Ginny to tell her everything that goes on in her life so that she can protect her appropriately. On the other hand, Georgia cannot tell Ginny everything. She does not want to burden her daughter with too much stress. As such, she only tells her the good and the relevant things about herself.

Discuss how each of these theories is applicable for managing the situation more effectively.

Social exchange theory and the symbolic interaction theory shapes the communication between Ginny and Georgia by determining the amount information that they can share with each other. The former creates a Johari window in Ginny’s communication.

It informs her what she can share with her mother and what she can share with her father based on the perceived costs and rewards of sharing. The later, on the other hand, determines the quantity of information that the mother can offload to the child without compromising her mental health. When the daughter accesses the information that she is not intended to know, she becomes depressed.
