Step 1 Read the article in Appendix D “Example of a Correlational Study” (Turner et al., 2016).
Step 2 Discuss the following questions related to the article found on ~ p. 177 under Critical Appraisal Criteria:
1. What quasi-experimental design is used in the study, and is it appropriate?
2. What does the author say about the limitations of the study?
3. What are the most common threats to internal and external validity?
Step 3 Read and respond to two other students’ posts.
Read other students’ posts and respond. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support your opinions.
Cite any sources in APA 7th edition format.
NUR400 Student Posts:
Student #1:The quasi-experimental design used in this study is descriptive and correlational. Descriptive designs do not have an intervention or treatment and are considered non-experimental which is appropriate for this study. Correlational studies usually measure all available values of an independent variable which is also appropriate for this study. The author says the sample size was small, which could have limited the power and obscured significant effects that may have been revealed with a larger sample. The sample consisted primarily of middle-class European/Canadians who chose to participate in the study; therefore, the results may not generalize to more diverse populations and to family members who chose not to participate. All but one of the parents in the current study were mothers; therefore, the results may not generalize to fathers. Finally, the survivors, parents, and siblings represented different sets of families (turner et al., 2016). The common threat to internal validity in this study is instrumentation and and testing and the threat to external validity is hawthorne effect where people can change their answers because they know that they are being studied.
NUR370 Discussion Post:
Step 1 Post a response to the discussion board. In your post, address the following prompts:
Define a systems-based perspective in relationship to health inequalities/disparities.
Describe the potential nursing role in addressing health inequalities/disparities at the system level.
Provide an example from your geographic area about which inequities could most benefit from a systems-based approach.
Step 2 Read other students’ posts and respond to at least two of them.
In your response, identify one aspect of your peers’ explanation of the nurse’s role in addressing health inequalities/disparities at the system level with which you agree and one aspect with which you have a different opinion. Share the aspect with which you agree with your peer and explain why. Then, share the different opinion you have and explain the reason behind your different opinion, using an example.
Use your personal experience, if it’s relevant, to support or debate other students’ posts. If differences of opinion occur, debate the issues professionally and provide examples to support opinions.
Cite any sources in APA 7th edition format.
NUR370 Student Posts:
Student #1: “Systems approach views health inequalities as patterns within the larger rubric of other facets of the human condition, such as educational outcomes and economic development. An extension of the approach is to view systems as complex adaptive systems, i.e. systems that are ‘open’ and adapt to the environment. They consist of dynamic adapting subsystems that exhibit non-linear interactions, while being ‘open’ to a similarly dynamic environment of interconnected systems” (B. Pourbohloula et al., 2015). “The role of nursing in addressing SDoH cannot be understated, given that nurses are key players in promoting health in ways both direct and indirect—helping to prevent illness and injury while also serving as advocates for better care. But the role of nurses in supporting social determinants of health is by no means a new or emerging practice” (Cirigliano, 2018). Nurses play a significant role in promoting health in many ways. I think the main way they do this is through the education that they give to their patients. By simply educating patients about how to live healthier lives, nurses can impact the health of their patients for the prolonged future. Before we educate though, knowing and understanding the social determinants of health and the needs of our patients according to that is very important. Knowing these things about our patients will help us know the best way to educate them and exactly what information will be best. I feel like in salt lake we are lucky because we have great access to a lot. I think the geographic areas that would benefit the most would be the more rural and low income areas.
Student #2: Health care inequality is when one group of people in an economy is in much worse health than another group, with limited access to care. The United States, the higher your income the better your health. The U.S guilty of income inequality more than anything. low income people are more likely to struggle with ADL’s, cause chronic illness makes them to sick to eat, bathe, and even basic care needs. Their children are also more likely to be obese, have diabetes, and even hypertension when compared to higher income families. There are so many causes of healthcare inequalities some of them are the poor are more likely to be sick “A 2013 study found that the number of low-income families in poor health was 15% higher than affluent families. High blood pressure affected 38.6% of the poorest fifth in the study compared to 29.9% of the richest fifth” (How Health Care., 2021). Disparities of care is that the low income neighborhoods don’t have access to the best hospitals, medical offices, or even technology. Rising Health care costs, “The rising cost of health care (Links to an external site.) can throw people into poverty.
A 2018 study found that medical expenses pushed 7 million people below the federal poverty line.14 Medical bills have become collection agencies’ biggest business. Every year, around 530,000 people declare medical bankruptcy” (How Health Care,.2021). Lack of access to healthcare, as many of the working poor don’t qualify for Medicaid, and a lot of places do not accept Obama care insurance. Then those who have poor health care, are more likely to be unemployed due to their chronic illnesses. So with poor access to medical care, high costs of medical bills, insurance people end up going to the Emergency rooms because they have nowhere else to go to be treated for their health care concerns, and nobody can be turned away due to the EMTALA law. So in turn this makes healthcare raise more due to the increasing use of emergencies room and people inability to pay. Some people are for universal healthcare where everyone pays the same for insurance and it’s the same insurance all around so everyone is treated fairly, with access to all the same hospitals, doctors offices, and medical technology.
A nursing role, is that nurses can improve their knowledge on healthcare inequalities and disparities. Knowledge is power. Once a nurse has the knowledge of where the disparities, and inequalities are the most they can start to address them, and try to help to find a solution to correct the problem. Our Jobs as nurses it to obtain and gather knowledge and data. Also education, this can help our patients if we educated them about the importance of taking their medication, or how to obtain health care access, and help give them to tools this can be more beneficial to them, opposed to doing nothing.
Opioid abuse is of high prevalence in the greater Cleveland area. With poverty rates on the rise, and poor access to health care people are buying their pain medications off the street, and unfortunately some are getting addicted. Universal health care could also help that as people would have easier access to physicians to be treated properly for their pain and illnesses.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
Don’t wait until the last minute
Fill in your requirements and let our experts deliver your work asap.
