Professional accountability refers to being accountable for our practice, this includes not only patient safety, but the healthcare environment, and our work (Charlotte, 2017). The American Nursing Code of Ethics defines professional accountability as being “answerable to oneself and others for one’s own actions” (Charlotte, 2017). As nurses we must hold ourselves to high clinical and ethical standards, including accepting responsibility for lower standards of care, should they occur (Charlotte, 2017). The concept of professional nursing incorporates safety, communication, quality, advanced decision-making, ethical obligations, advocating for patients, and following standards set forth in the Nursing Code of Ethics (Gaines, 2021).
Nurses demonstrate professional accountability by avoiding shortcuts in clinical practice, it goes against evidence-based practice and although not erroneous it is inadequate (Mula, 2019).

Nurses incorporate self-care to spiritual well-being and mental health for both nurses and patients by intentionally caring for themselves. This can include reducing stress, exercising, and making sure your spiritual, physical, emotional, social, and intellectual needs are being met. If nurses are holistically meeting their needs, they are better mentally and emotionally equipped to care for their patients (TWU, 2021).
According to the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (2019), the bible says “Come to me, all who labor and are heavily laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matt. 11:28-30). “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7). Self-care focuses on being aware of your own limits to protect your own well-being (Liu, 2019).
