Unit 5 Discussion Board

Reflection is a critical of the research writing process, especially when one needs to support their arguments and aspects of their research works and persuade their audiences. Reflection allows one to identify, question, and critically evaluate course-based learning opportunities and incorporate their unique observations, experiences, impressions and beliefs as well as assumptions and biases (Bjerkvik & Hilli, 2019). Reflection provides a chance for one to consider their personal experiences and observations to shape thinking and acceptance of novel ideas.

I have learned through this course the importance of reflection in research and would apply it at work and in personal writing in several ways. Firstly, I have learned that good research-supported argument must integrate personal experiences and relate to the issues that happen in one’s life. The implication is that at work, one must always critically evaluate their actions and decisions and ascertain if they will lead to better outcomes both short and long term. Secondly, reflection offers one a chance to learn new things and accept new approaches to issues (Lee et al., 2020). Therefore, I have learned persuasion requires sufficient evidence and integration of the context for the audiences to understand the issues at hand.

The incorporation of research helps to strengthen arguments at both personal and professional levels. In their paper, Shum et al. (2017) assert that reflection and reflective writing deepens one’s understanding of primary concepts and assist in critical appraisal of their developing professional identity, and builds qualities for continuous lifelong learning. Therefore, the incorporation of research helps to support arguments in professional settings by providing evidence to prove the existence of facts and positions that one takes (Reljić et al., 2019). The incorporation of research ensures that one’s arguments at any level are supported and well advanced to attain persuasion.

Assignment Description

Primary Response is due by Thursday (11:59:59pm Central), Peer Responses are due by Saturday (11:59:59pm Central).

Primary Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 200–250 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions by your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

For this Discussion Board, please complete the following:

Reflection is important to the process of writing research-supported arguments. In particular, when writing persuasive arguments, you should reflect on your experiences and how to bring those to life for your reader.

In your post, as you reflect on your own experiences in this class, describe how you will use research in your professional or personal writing going forward. Answer the following:

What have you learned that you can apply at work or in your personal writing?
How might incorporating research help strengthen your arguments personally or professionally?

Tips for Completing Your Post

Consider the most recent time that you made an argument in writing. Perhaps you wrote an e-mail to a supervisor or colleague at work in which you had to persuade them to take a particular course of action. Maybe you commented on a news article posted online.
How could you use research in these types of writing activities in the future to strengthen your argument and drive your point home for your reader?

Need an example?

The following is an example of what your primary post should look like:

The most important thing I have learned in this class is that research can make my arguments stronger. I've also learned that, contrary to what I previously thought, it's not really difficult to do research to support my arguments. I just didn't have the right tools before. Now that I know where to look to find credible sources and how to evaluate those sources and integrate them into my own writing, I feel more confident when I'm trying to get my point across and convince others. I will probably use research more in my professional life than in my personal life, but you never know. There are a lot of opportunities to include research when making arguments on social media or when trying to convince family and friends to take a course of action, like buying a product, using a service, or taking up a new hobby, as we've practiced in this class. I personally find myself engaged in political discussions quite often, but I sometimes don't have the patience to back up my arguments with research. I know my arguments would be stronger if I took the time to look up articles and statistics that support my claims, so this is an area of opportunity for me going forward.
