One of the five elements of emotional intelligence is self-awareness. Explain why emotional intelligence is crucial for effective leadership. Discuss what behaviors someone with a high degree of self-awareness would demonstrate within the context of leading and managing groups. Provide an example.
Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize your own feelings as well as the feelings of others. (Whitney, 2018) There are five elements of EI that has been shown to be beneficial for leaders. These elements include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. according to the article Emotional intelligence: a Critical Leadership Quality for the Nurse Executive, “Lack of EI can derail the career of even the most experienced nurse executive. A nurse executive who has strong EI can demonstrate vision- or goal-based decisions in contrast to allowing her emotions to rule her decisions” (Stichler, 2006).

One of the elements, self-awareness, is important to be able to understand your own emotions and how they might affect others. Self-awareness is also a quality that is known to strengthen leadership. (Whitney, 2018) Characteristics of self-awareness include self-confidence, emotional self-awareness, and accurate self-assessment. (Whitney, 2018) An example of self-awareness is a nurse being aware of their feelings about certain things, such as culture or religion, and understanding their patients feelings about culture or religion and not allowing their feelings interfere with the way they interact with their patients.
According to Stichler, there are 4 steps that you can take to improve your EI. The first step is to improve your self-awareness which can be done through the observation and identification of your emotions as well as others. The second step is to improve self-management “by analyzing situations after the fact and identifying the feelings or emotions that were underlying a specific reactions or response” (Stichler, 2006). Step three is to build social awareness. Building social awareness can be done by understanding your emotions as well as your reactions and behaviors when it comes to cultural norms within your organization. (Stichler, 2006) Lastly, step four is to analyze and manage relationships. Relationships is a major component of management and is important to have good relationships among those you work with.

Self awareness is very important in leadership. It allows leaders to have control over interactions if they can anticipate ahead of time. It can be broken down in two broad categories. They are internal self-awareness which “represents how clearly we see our own values, passions, aspirations, fit with our environment, reactions (including thoughts, feelings, behaviors, strengths, and weaknesses), and impact on others” (Eurich, 2018) and external self-awareness which is “understanding how other people view us, in terms of those same factors listed above” (Eurich, 2018). Having a good balance on both of these can make a more confident, creative, and more-effective leader. (Eurich, 2018). It can also play an important factor in time management and allow a balance for work and personal life.

I like you are post. If one wants to be successful as a manager, he/she need to be strong, loyal and motivated, and this should be clear to everyone. Good self-control, conscientiousness, social skills, and trustworthiness are all key to being a good manager. Robert F, Kaplan found that many executives do not notice their wrongdoing at all. Science is unanimous that emotional intelligence is not innate, but learnable. Those who have defects here can still fix them in adulthood. A prerequisite is the willingness to change behavior and to develop further. In management training and management coaching, managers should be supported to improve their management skills.

Emotional intelligence (EI) can be referred to as the capacity for one to recognize their feelings as well as the feelings of others (Kishkilev, 2018). EI has five elements that has been proven to be of great essence to leaders. Among these elements are self-awareness, self-management, social skills, empathy, and motivation. Notably, EI is very mandatory for any leader seeking to lead effectively and the absence of EI can derail ones plans to lead in an effective manner.
