Even today, many myths and stereotypes exist about the older adult. Despite changing demographics and research in the area of gerontology, these biases and misconceptions are still present. The Learning Team assignment this week provides your team with the opportunity to review some of these myths or stereotypes.

Prepare a matrix similar to the example provided that explains the myths and stereotypes associated with older adults.

Include the following in your team’s matrix:

• Four myths or stereotypes
• Common issues associated with each myth and stereotype
• The reality behind each myth or stereotype
• An explanation of what is being done to prevent or eliminate these myths and stereotypes

HCS 548 WEEK 3 Adult Life Transitions

Read all of the following vignettes.

Vignette One:

Mr. and Dr. Tanaka-Griffin are both turning 68 years old. He is Anglo, and she is a third generation Japanese American. The couple has been married for 13 years. This is his third marriage and her second. They have no children together; he has one disabled son whom they care for and she has five children. Mr. Griffin owns a successful liquor store and a local laundry mat. Dr. Tanaka-Griffin is an oncologist at a local university hospital. The couple plans to retire in three years. Their health is fine; however, Mr. Griffin was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure, and unrelated to his diagnosis, he fell while walking his poodle on a familiar walking course two weeks ago.

Vignette Two:

Mr. and Mrs. DeGuzman have been married for 54 years. He was recently in a car accident where he hit a parked vehicle. His health was already compromised, and with this recent event, he was admitted to a hospital and needs a breathing machine. His wife and two grown sons are considering hospice. They reside in a single story home. Mrs. DeGuzman has been a homemaker her entire adult life. She was never a joiner and would identify her recently deceased twin sister as her “best and only friend.” They live off of social security and a small pension from the Train Operators fund.

Vignette Three:

Mr. Gibbs is 89 years old, and his wife is 86 years old. They have been married for 67 years and have 4 children. Their oldest son has been in prison for the last 25 years, and his parents are still struggling to cope. They have two twin daughters who live in different states, and their youngest son lives at home with them. He was recently divorced and has partial custody over a 17 year old who brings great joy to Mr. and Mrs. Gibbs. Mr. Gibbs is a retired judge, and his wife is a retired school teacher. Together they pull in an annual pension of over $200,000 a year. Their legal paperwork is in a tight trust and their designated power of attorney for health is their cousin, who is also their neighbor. The power of attorney for their estate is one of the twin girls who calls and visits frequently.

The Alternate Living Environments assignment is divided into two parts. Part One of this assignment is due in Week Four, and Part Two is due in Week Six. According to Novak (2012), federal funding for older adults has more than doubled since the 1960s. This surge reflects the increased number of older people and the growth in services or programs for them. These programs and services form a social safety net that ensures a minimum standard of health care and income for older people is met.

Create a 700- to 1,050-word brochure describing the sources of retirement income for older people, including both governmental and personal sources of income. In your brochure, include:
