APN Scope of Practice

Arkansas is the state I intend to practice in after graduation from the APRN program. This section will discuss educational, license, and regulatory requirements as well as practice and prescriptive authority of APRNs in Arkansas.

Educational Requirements

An APRN in Arkansas should have earned a Master’s degree in nursing or completed a doctorate. The APRN should have done an NP program approved by Arkansas State Board of Nursing (ASNB) and should be nationally accredited (Mitchell et al., 2017).  Besides, the APRN should have taken core courses in physiology, health assessment, and pharmacology.

License Requirements

The Nurse Practice Act mandates that any individual practicing as a nurse in any level in Arkansas be licensed by the ASBN. The ASBN requires that one has a valid RN license with an RN experience of a minimum of 2,000 hours to become an APRN. Besides, APRNs are required to renew their license biannually. APRNs who let their licenses to lapse and who have not practiced during the previous licensure period can be reinstated after appeal, payment of renewal fee, paying late penalty fee, and after attaining the continuing education requirements.

Regulatory Requirements

An aspiring APRN must be certified by a national APRN certifying body approved by the ASBN. The APRN should acquire certification within a particular field (Mitchell et al., 2017). Prescriptive Authority

An NP with a certificate for full independent practice authority in Arkansas is allowed by law to prescribe medicines, drugs, or therapeutic devices in line with their scope of practice. NPs with prescriptive authority are required to have prescriptive protocols, which indicate classifications of controlled and legend substances. NPs must adjust the protocol to meet their specialty.  For an NP to prescribe a legend medicine or drug, not indicated in the written protocols, they should obtain a written or verbal order from the collaborating physician before issuing the prescription or order. Furthermore, an APRN granted prescriptive authority must get a DEA registration number to allow them to prescribe controlled substances under schedule II – V.

Nurse Practitioner (NONPF) Core Competencies

In my current organization, I apply my leadership skills to encourage collaboration within members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team as well as patients, their families, and the community to enhance health care outcomes. In addition, I use my leadership skills to advocate for high-quality, accessible, and cost-effective health care services.  Ethics is the second NONPF competency that I have identified as an area of strength.  The ethic competency entails being familiar with the ethical repercussions of advances in science and traversing ethical dilemmas particular to the patient population of focus (Thomas et al., 2017). I identified ethics as an area of strength because I seamlessly incorporate ethical principles when making patient decisions. Besides, I am able to assess the ethical implications of patient care decisions. I also implement ethical decisions to intricate issues involving patients, communities, and healthcare system.

Opportunities for Growth

Competency areas identified as opportunities for growth include Health Delivery System and Independent Practice. The health delivery system competency entails planning, developing, and executing community and public health programs as well as organizational decision-making and healthcare reform (Thomas et al., 2017). I wish to acquire skills in integrating knowledge on organizations and health systems to enhance healthcare. Also, I want to apply relationship-building and negotiation skills to impact the delivery of healthcare positively. Besides, I wish to improve my skills in providing patient care that is culturally competent and analyzing the healthcare system’s effect on stakeholders.

The competency on independent practice warrants that the NP can work as a licensed independent practitioner. I wish to improve on my knowledge and skills to function effectively as an autonomous NP. I also need to improve on my ability to work professionally with a high degree of accountability. As an upcoming NP, I need to improve my skills in managing diagnosed and undiagnosed clients as an independent NP (Thomas et al., 2017). I wish to improve on providing health promotion, identifying abnormal findings, complying with screening and diagnostic practices, and prescribing treatment.

Scholarly Activities to Help Achieve NP Competencies

Scholarly activities that I can participate in over the master’s program to facilitate in attaining the competencies include engaging in community and public health programs and mentored practicum experiences. The community and public health programs will allow me to apply skills in consensus-building, negotiation, and partnering to promote changes in healthcare in society (Tractenberg et al., 2019). Besides, the programs will improve my skills in developing effective systems of health care that meet the health needs of populations from different cultures. Mentored practicum experiences will improve my knowledge and skills in providing health care as an autonomous NP (Tractenberg et al., 2019). They will also polish my skills in assessing, diagnosing, interpreting diagnostic tests, and providing health promotion.

Leadership Skills

Leadership Skills Required to Lead in Complex Systems

Crucial leadership skills in for an NP to lead in a complex health system include organizational, decision-making, and communication skills. Excellent organizational skills are crucial in enabling an NP to handle several projects and duties successfully. They allow the NP to identify and prioritize the tasks to keep them on track as well as pay attention to details in the delivery of healthcare (Lamb et al., 2018). NPs working in complex healthcare systems are required to make major decisions in their line of work. NP leaders are expected to apply critical thinking in decision-making. Besides, NPs are looked upon to manage complex healthcare situations and should thus make accurate and clear decisions (Lamb et al., 2018). NPs further need to identify when and how to engage other parties in decision-making. They should also know when to obtain reliable information sources to enable them to make sound clinical decisions.

In communication, the NP should demonstrate the ability to initiate meaningful communication. NPs with excellent written and verbal communication skills and great active listening define interactions in a department or organization (Lamb et al., 2018).  Communication skills are vital when communicating with patients and families and or members of the interdisciplinary health team. NPs with excellent communication skills can discuss uncomfortable and difficult elements with patients about their care.

Strategies to Help Develop NP Leadership Skills

Strategies I can employ to develop NP leadership skills include joining a mentorship program and a professional nursing organization. It would be important to have a mentor who will guide me in my leadership journey and provide support when facing leadership challenges (Lamb et al., 2018). Professional nursing organizations facilitate leadership development by providing members with opportunities to develop their leadership skills by taking leadership positions in the organizations (Lamb et al., 2018). Besides, they offer programs in mentorship and leadership development.

Conclusion

An APRN in Arkansas should have an RN license, a Master’s or DNP degree, and be certified by a national body. APRN reduced practice regulations in Arkansas constrain APRN’s ability to work independently. APRNs must enter into a collaborative practice agreement with a physician and are restricted to prescribing drugs under schedule III–V.  My areas of strength in the NP core competencies are leadership and ethics, while areas for growth include the health delivery system and independent practice. Vital leadership skills for an NP include organizational, decision-making, and communication skills.

    Late Assignment Policy
