Individual wellness and health usually depend on several things, which should be under considerable control if an individual must have better health outcomes. Central to individuals’ or families’ holistic health view is family health assessment since the activity is critical in directing a family nurse on the appropriate area of focus (Kaakiken et al., 2018). Therefore, various functional health patterns are applied in assessing individuals or families, with the assessment formulated to retrieve as much data as

possible from individuals or families and analyze the data. The purpose of this write-up is to formulate an interview questionnaire and used it in a family-focused functional assessment. In addition, from the interview conducted, the paper will also address the family structure, summarize the specific family health behaviors and functional health patterns. Again, the paper will address how family system theory can be used to bring changes in the family to effect positive changes.

The Family Structure

For the assessment, the family chosen can be described as one which is embracing modern trends, though they still value their traditional culture and beliefs. The family has five members, a father, a mother, and three children. While two of the children are their biological children, the remaining one is adopted. The family is a white family which embraces Christianity as their religion. Both the husband and wife have white-color jobs, stable financially, and so, they are among the high class in the society. Their financial comfortability has enabled them to build a home where the children live peacefully and have a good upbringing environment.

Overall Family Health Behavior and Current Health

In general terms, the family’s health behavior can be scored as an eight out of ten on a scale of one to ten. Hence it can be described as good. In the last years, the family has been proactive regarding their health choices. Such a commendable behavior has been made possible due to the fact that the wife is a trained nutritionist while the man has a passion for physical fitness, bringing a synergistic effect on their health. They, therefore, decide to prevent illnesses rather than cure them. The family has scheduled timetables for physical exercise and always tries to have a balanced diet focusing on organic and healthy foods. The major focus of the couple is towards a bigger picture of cultivating a culture of good nutrition and active physical exercise among their children.  NRS429V Wk4 Assignment Family Health Assessment

The husband is responsible for ensuring that every member of the family follows their physical exercise timetable as appropriate. He works with the wife to ensure that the children do not become victims of the sedentary lifestyle that comes with watching television most of the time and playing video games. While the parents engage in one-hour daily physical activity alone, they go to family sessions on Saturdays and Sundays to help the children develop the culture. Apart from the physical activities which the children are directed to undertake at home, they are also encouraged to actively participate in school activities such as sports.

Even though the family is nearly perfect in diet and physical exercise, they are not as good at wellness check-ups or doctor visits. They are active rather than proactive as they only go to see a health professional when a need or a problem arises. From the assessment, it was noted that all the members of the family are mentally and physically fit. However, the father and one child had illness issues that required the doctor’s attention in the previous year. The issue has since been fixed, and the family is currently healthy.

Functional Health Pattern Strengths and Barriers to Health Areas.

As earlier indicated, this family was near perfect in terms of their nutrition and physical exercise. The fact that the mother is a trained nutritionist makes the family have a healthy diet as part of their daily lifestyle. Among the criteria they use in choosing the family food is that the foods have to be organic and healthy while the snacks offered to the children are also healthy foods. Even though the children can sometimes use the normal processed food as snacks, they are usually provided with fruits to use as snacks. The excellence of the family in this area is also evident from the nature of foods stored in the fridge and in the house, which are all healthy. Physical exercise is also part of the family’s strength. The parents, especially the father, are passionate about staying physically sound and are leading from the front. They have ensured that the lifestyle and culture of physical exercise are instilled in their children, with daily personal exercise routines and family physical exercise engagements during weekends. NRS429V Wk4 Assignment Family Health Assessment

In terms of barriers to health, one of the areas identified includes sleep and the family sleeping patterns. The parents have been used to not getting enough sleep, and seemingly, the children have been copying the poor trend from them. The parents have confessed that they usually stay up until late with work engagements. They have found it extremely difficult to adjust and even make their children sleep early enough, even if they were to go to school the following day. This is likely to affect the children’s school performance and their mental health in the long run (Suvillan & Ordia, 2018). As pointed earlier, this family only visits the doctor when a need or a problem arises, making this another area of concern. Doctors’ visits and medical check-ups are critical for an individual’s health, and even though this family acknowledges the same, it has not been easy to make it part of their lifestyle or culture. There is a probability that in the future, they may identify a health problem in a family member when it is too late to undertake any meaningful treatment effort.

The other identified area of problem is in the family roles and relationships. The parents confessed that they have more frequent family disagreements and arguments, brought about by how they spend their salary. Indeed, they said that there is a time it went so bad that they thought of divorce, but they eventually decided to stay together and solve the differences for the sake of the children. Even though they still have such disagreements, they are able to solve them better after they made an attempt to see a marriage and finance counsellor. Such disagreements and arguments are not good for their children, affecting them mentally and socially (Keller et al., 2018). NRS429V Wk4 Assignment Family Health Assessment

Application of System Theory to Solicit Change

The family systems theory can be applied appropriately to help bring change to this family for the better. This theory regards a family as a unified whole and not as isolation of individuals (Keller et al., 2018). The behavior of the persons in the family system is controlled by setting boundaries and aspects of agreements formulated. Therefore, the responsibilities and roles of every member of the unit are appropriately defined, and the frameworks of respect are formulated. As such, this theory can be appropriate in helping this family define the behavior boundaries. For instance, the parents and the children can make deliberate agreements that no one should be awake or working after a specific time during the night. The parents can also set boundaries for their arguments while they still work on rooting up the culture of disagreements and arguments. For example, they may come up with a rule that only constructive arguments should be undertaken and that no disagreements should be shown when the children are seeing.

Conclusion

Many factors determine the overall health and well-being of individuals and families. Therefore, such factors should be frequently checked and evaluated to ensure that families are on track. This assignment has entailed a formulation of an interview questionnaire used to assess a family having a total of five members. While this family did well in most of the health indicators, there are a few areas in which they still need to adjust for better overall health.

NRS 429V Week 5 Discussion 1

Mrs. Jones, a widow, is no longer able to live independently and is requiring more and more help with her self-care. Her daughter, Susie, who is married with three school-aged children, agrees to let her mother move in with her. Susie is concerned with balancing the demands of her career and the needs of her family, especially now that her elderly and chronically ill mother will need assistance. She is also unsure about how she feels with the reversal of roles, having to now be the primary caregiver of her mother. How can the nurse, caring for this family, assist with the changes they are about to undergo? How can both the family structural theory and the family developmental theory be applied to this scenario? How can health education enhance health promotion for this family?

NRS 429V Week 5 Discussion 2

How could you use the family structural theory to determine if a family is dysfunctional or not? Provide evidence to support your answer.
