I just wanted to let you know that I share your need to clarify the differences between medical and nursing practice problems. I look at the differences as a nursing practice problem focusing on the patient and family’s well-being that considers their emotions, culture, belief system, and abilities. Medical problems are a much broader term, and although nurses are part of the medical system, the nursing problems are focused on the areas of expertise and applications of treatment by nurses. One example would be the work done for catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). Nursing procedures directly affect prevention by utilizing evidence-based guidelines for insertion, maintenance, staff education, appropriate removal techniques, and utilizing alternatives to catheterization (Ling et al., 2023). Another way to look at how a nursing diagnosis differs from a medical diagnosis. Nursing diagnosis addresses issues and complications related to a disease, whereas a medical diagnosis is the disease itself, and the focus is on medications and treatment. I am sure that with time and practice, it will become easier to differentiate between the two.
