My academic and professional goals are to improve health outcomes among individuals diagnosed with chronic illnesses. I also aim at making our communities healthier through sustainable and socially acceptable health promotion interventions. After reading the vision and mission statements for Walden University it helped me realize that the University was looking out for my best interest as I further my educational career.  Walden University provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change (Walden University, n.d.).  

A way for the University to fulfill these commitments is to follow the AANC guidelines.  DNP Essentials 1 through 8 are the foundational outcome competencies deemed essential for all graduates of a DNP program regardless of specialty or functional focus (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [ANCC], 2006). These competencies discuss topics such as principles and laws, leadership skills, evidence-based practice, patient care technology, advocacy in healthcare, improving outcomes, improving the Nation’s health, and advance nursing practice.

Following these competencies and knowing the stated commitments of Walden University will help maintain my high standards for education and help me achieve my academic and professional goals.  I know that in order to obtain and continue the Universities AACN accreditation the school must follow strict guidelines and offer the most up to date education to their students and this is important to me. 

There are several professional and academic goals that I would like to achieve.  Two of them include improving the access and care for psychiatric patients within my community and be a role model for fellow co-workers to help motivate them to further their education.   Some plans for me to create change within my community are to lead by example, educate and encourage others to do their best, provide my patients with a low stress, safe environment for patient care, teach my patients ways to improve their psychiatric and physical health as well as maintaining my own health by implementing daily self-care.  

Walden University defines positive social change as a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies (Walden University, (n.d.).  If I am able to focus on Walden University positive social change strategies, I will definitely be able to achieve my academic and professional goals.

In order to meet the needs of our communities, a diverse health care system needs a diverse nursing staff. In a diverse community, having a nursing staff that is culturally competent will make health care more effective and help people from minority groups do better. (Gates, 2018). Research shows that people from racial or ethnic minorities have worse health outcomes from diseases that can be prevented or treated.

This population also has different access to care and different quality of care. Having a nursing staff that is culturally competent will help reduce health disparities and break down barriers by using a culturally sensitive approach when talking to people who don’t speak English well or who don’t know much about health. 2014 by Jackson and Gracia).

The vision, mission, and goals of Walden show how important it is to have a diverse group of graduates who will use what they’ve learned to solve important problems and make positive changes in society. (Walden University in 2021). The seventh (VII) Essential Competency for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) also talks about how important cultural diversity and sensitivity are for DNP graduates to improve the health of the population through “Clinical Prevention and Population Health.” (AACN, 2006, p.15).

Dr. Susan Stefan said that a DNP program will help nurses become “change agents” (Laureate Education, 2011). We will be able to reach out to a diverse community, address health disparities, and improve their health if we have nurses from many different cultures.

Having worked as a nurse for more than 30 years, I became very interested in helping other nurses and creating nurse leaders. I have been a guest speaker at a few colleges in the past to encourage students from minority groups and countries where English is not the first language. It was very rewarding to meet and talk with them.

As a graduate student, the highlight for me was presenting at the International Nurse Conference GANES in Washington, DC with my mentor. My main professional and personal goal will be to speak at more nursing conferences about mentoring and continue to inspire more nurses, especially minority nurses. Pate (2011) talked about the simple steps that can be taken to teach and guide nurse leaders in ambulatory care, and that made me realize that I am already taking a lot of those steps.

Talking about mentoring can only help the nursing field move forward and encourage more people who aren’t sure about becoming leaders to do so. This goal will be in line with one of the goals that Walden University promotes, which is for people to use their “knowledge to positively affect their profession, communities, and society.” (10, 2021, Walden University).

Another goal of mine is to become a stronger advocate for higher educated nurses. I find that organizations do not always encourage nurses to seek higher degrees. By having bachelor or graduate prepared nurses, we improve patient safety and outcomes while promoting and enhancing our profession. This will align with Walden University’s goal to become agents of positive change for patients as well as for our nursing profession. (Walden University, 2021, p.10).

The second topic of discussion is the relationship between the AACN Competencies and the Walden Mission, Vision, and Outcomes.
Leadership competency is a crucial component of nursing education and professionalism.
Leadership development has been a cornerstone of the programs and services offered by Walden University. Leadership development must get specific focus if nursing students are to become leaders in their profession and contribute to the delivery of high-quality healthcare. Healthcare organizations provide a valuable social service, and nurses should be influential agents of change inside these institutions to make healthcare more accessible to all.

The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is the premier organization in the academic nursing field that promotes diversity and inclusiveness. Its position statement on diversity, equity, and inclusion in nursing academics represents the fundamental goals of Walden University.

It is anticipated that immigrants will account for a greater proportion of future U.S. population increase, as the United States becomes an increasingly cosmopolitan nation (Biggerstaff & Skomra, 2020). Moreover, sensitive approaches of caring for a culturally varied society are essential for achieving health and wellbeing (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2021).

For Walden University to produce culturally competent nurses at the forefront of implementing social justice in diverse organizations and hospitals, the admissions process must be inclusive. Receiving education on various cultural values and communication styles is vital for eliminating unconscious racial bias and improving patient health outcomes.

Implementing meaningful social change is one of the guiding principles of Walden University. As stated clearly, incorporating social change involves the graduate’s ability to produce creative ideas, tactics, and activities that promote worth and dignity across a range of individuals, communities, organizations, and cultures. The desire to aid others has been the driving force behind the pursuit of a nursing degree.

Consequently, I intend to include social change utilizing the knowledge learned through the rigorous training at the School of Nursing by putting that knowledge into practice. As a family nurse practitioner working in a clinic, I strive to enable families to develop their health or illness relationships by delivering accurate information, being dependable, and offering emotional support to patients.

According to Hafskjold et al. (2017), showing emotional compassion fosters a mutually supportive and trusting relationship. I emphasize to my patients the importance of physical and emotional affection throughout illness in order to facilitate good coping and promote better health outcomes.
