Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography

Health care delivery’s primary purpose is ensuring patients receive timely and efficient care. Over time, technology use has intensified as care providers strive to achieve more effectiveness, timeliness, and patient satisfaction. Nursing research has explored the appropriateness of various technologies, including telehealth, electronic health records, mobile apps, and others. Exploring this research helps nurses understand informatics from multiple dimensions and its promise in the evolving practice. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of artificial intelligence in patient care through an annotated bibliography.

Introduction of the Health Care Technology

Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to be an integral component of health care as care providers seek to improve the delivery of care in organizations and communities. Bajwa et al. (2021) described AI as the science and engineering of intelligent machines that imitate human cognitive functions. Such functions in nursing include learning and problem-solving. AI’s design and advanced nature allow it to play a fundamental role in anticipating problems, recognizing patterns, and recommending diagnoses depending on the patient’s health condition. The most interesting thing about AI is its potential to execute functions in a similar or better capacity than humans. Therefore, it is well-positioned to replace or support nursing professionals to ensure high-quality, seamless, and timely care.

In health practice, patient care outcomes depend on the approaches health care providers use in health care delivery. Over time, technology use has intensified as health care providers advance their processes to optimize quality and safety standards. As technology use intensifies, it is crucial to examine its use and how it enhances quality and safety. Current and past research studies provide extensive literature promoting technology use in health care delivery. The purpose of this paper is to provide an annotated bibliography of a selected technology for enhancing quality and safety in nursing.

Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic

Telehealth has become an integral part of the present technology-driven health practice. I selected this technology since it is a highly advancing area whose role has become more vivid during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also enhances patient safety and quality of care in multiple dimensions, including communication, efficiency, interprofessional collaboration, and remote care. To understand how the technology works, I reviewed past literature relevant to the topic after searching relevant articles from leading nursing databases. Such databases include CINAHL Complete, PubMed, Medline with Full-Text, Google Scholar, and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Search terms included “telehealth and patient safety,” “telehealth and health care quality,” and “use of telehealth in health care delivery.” Many articles explore the topic differently, but the most relevant are annotated below.

Annotated Bibliography

Gajarawala, S. N., &Pelkowski, J. N. (2021).Telehealth benefits and barriers. The Journal for Nurse Practitioners: JNP17(2), 218–221. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nurpra.2020.09.013

This article is a narrative review of telehealth benefits in health care delivery and the barriers that health care providers must address to achieve better outcomes. The central emphasis is that telehealth was primarily developed to provide basic care in rural and underserved areas, but its use has increased since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gajarawala and Pelkowski (2021) describe telehealth as a reliable technology to enhance patient satisfaction, efficient and quality care, and minimize health care costs. It achieves these outcomes through tech-driven services such as medical education that creates an informed patient population, remote patient monitoring, and patient consultation via videoconferencing and wireless health care devices.

Patients’ physical visits and wait times to health care providers have been reduced due to telehealth, a benefit that increases patient safety by reducing their exposure to infections and health complications. Above all, communication through health applications promotes interprofessional collaboration, leading to better health care quality due to shared decision-making. According to this source, telehealth is crucial in the nursing practice since it promotes a collaborative practice and improves patient-provider connection. Enabling health care providers to serve patients remotely is another benefit that justifies its use in modern practice. The article is detailed about the role of technology in improving the quality of care and patient safety. The second outcome area is remote patient monitoring. Here, telehealth allows health care providers to monitor vital signs from a distance and relay instructions depending on the patient’s condition. Such an approach enables health care providers to serve more patients and more promptly.

The third outcome area is access to health care services and health care professionals. Telehealth promotes access to health care services unavailable in rural areas. According to this source, telehealth has revolutionized the nursing practice by reducing physical visits and enabling nurses to serve a broader patient population. The interdisciplinary team can also link up with different technologies under telehealth to provide different health services, including education, treatment, and referrals. Out of the many possible options, the resource is highly informative on the main outcome areas that justify telehealth use in nursing practice. The outcome areas are grouped into different categories, enabling readers to understand the importance of telehealth comprehensively.

Summary of Recommendation

Technology and modern nursing practice are inseparable. As the nursing practice continues to be more technology-reliant, nurses and other health care providers must adopt innovative ways of providing health care services. Telehealth has emerged as an effective and reliable technology for educating patients and providing other health care services remotely (Gajarawala & Pelkowski, 2021; Monaghesh & Hajizadeh, 2020). It also enables health care providers to collaborate through digital devices. Other outcomes justifying its use include reducing exposure to harm, allowing health care providers to serve underserved and unique populations, and reducing travels to health care providers (Neville 2018; Tian et al., 2021). It is a technology that care practitioners cannot overlook as they look forward to more accessible, quick, and safer nursing practice.

Telehealth use depends on many factors. According to Bokolo (2021), technology adoption is expensive since it forces health care organizations to change health care delivery models. Massive resources are also spent to acquire and implement new technologies, implying that organizational resources are a key influence as far as technology selection is concerned. The situation and government policies also influence technology use in a health care setting. Monaghesh and Hajizadeh (2020) mentioned that telehealth adoption has increased due to government regulation to reduce physical interaction and observe social distancing. Culture/social norms are another determinant. In rural settings, health care facilities cannot intensify technology use if patients are not tech-savvy or receptive to technology use.

Telehealth implementation can only be justified by analyzing its outcomes in health practice. Firstly, telehealth is associated with better patient outcomes. For instance, it ensures that patients receive a wide range of health care services, including health education, treatment advice, and monitoring, at their convenient locations (Gajarawala&Pelkowski, 2021; Monaghesh & Hajizadeh, 2020). Telehealth also promotes access to health care services. Besides enabling health care providers to serve many populations, it ensures that providers are accessible and health care services are more affordable (Neville 2018; Tian et al., 2021). Health care organizations looking forward to safe and satisfactory patient care based on a collaborative practice should also consider telehealth.

Conclusion

The current health practice is largely tech-driven. In response, health care organizations must implement the necessary technologies as situations prompt. From the annotated bibliography, health care research demonstrates the vital role of telehealth in promoting access to care and as an effective, reliable option for safe and quality care. Health care teams also collaborate through telehealth as they monitor, serve, and advise patients remotely.
