Statistics reveal that the rates of vaccination remains high in children across the globe. However, certain parental concerns exist that such vaccinations could lead to autism. Three particular hypothesis have been proposed to further these claims and they include; 1) the combination measles-mumps-rubella vaccine leads to autism by damaging the intestinal lining hence allowing encephalopathic proteins to enter; 2) the preservative containing thimerosal, an ethylmercury in certain vaccines may impact the central nervous system and 3) the immune system is weakened by the simultaneous administration of vaccines. The epidemiological relevance of the above theories in relation to autism will be discussed in the present paper.
